Robert F. Gilbert

Robert F. Gilbert passed away peacefully at home on July 27, 2021 at 92 years old.  Born in Syracuse, NY on August 22, 1928 to Charles and Amy Gilbert (nee Fischer), he moved to Mt. Vernon, NY as a child.  In Mt. Vernon, he attended AB Davis High School and was captain of the school’s football team.   He enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, buttook a leave after his freshman year to enlist in the Army at the end of World War II.  Stationed in Honolulu he was DJ for the Armed Forces Radio.

After the War, he returned to Penn and graduated in 1950.  He met his wife Doris (nee Howard) and was married at the Plaza Hotel in 1952.   He joined his wife’s family business as Director of Camp Seneca in Pawling, New York, and expanded the camp with a series of basketball programs, and internationally with Seneca in the Alps, a partnership with the International Summer Camp in Montana-Crans, Switzerland.   Upon selling Camp Seneca in 1976, he launched a variety of international travel programs in culinary arts and sports.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Doris, his son, Jon, and daughter Paige, and his two grandchildren, Jason and Randall, as well as his brother Lawrence Gilbert.   A private memorial service is planned.
