Fortunata Huaman Castillo

June 11, 1930 — January 11, 2022

White Plains

Donna Huaman-Castillo (Daughter): Fortunata Huaman Castillo, June 11, 1930 - January 11, 2022. My mom Fortunata was born in Urquillos, Cuzco, Perú in the Sacred Valley of the Inkas to Natividad Castillo Quispihinga and Antonio Huaman. She was one of ten children. My mom was a strong indigenous Inka/Quechua woman who lived by the values and principles of her ancestors; Ama Llulla, Ama Suwa, Ama Quella/Don't Lie, Don't Steal, Don't Be Lazy. She loved to climb the mountains, ride horses bear back and eat fruit from the trees she would climb. She enjoyed having a vegetable garden in White Plains, NY where she lived for well over fifty years after she moved from Rye, NY when I was three years old. She was a very hardworking, independent single mom. She taught me all about our family history and our ancestors. Unfortunately, my mom succumbed to dementia. My mom was 91 years old. I love you Mom.

My mom is predeceased by her grandparents, father, mother, three sisters, two brothers and a nephew. She is survived by two brothers, two sisters, her daughter Donna, her grandson Inti and her granddaughter Cipriana.

Inti Huaman (Grandson): Fortunata Huaman was a spitfire of a woman. She scaled the Andes mountains riding horses bareback, taunted wild mountain lions, beat up the village boys, migrated from Peru to the United States circa 1950s solo. Raised my mother as a single mom. Never needed no man. I am proud to have had her as my grandmother/elder. She taught me to be self- sufficient at a young age, to be proud of who I am and of my ancestors, to care & have compassion for others, and most of all to live life and have fun! Te amo mucho Abuela Fortunata!
Peace and Love. - Inti Huaman

Cipriana Castillo (Granddaughter): Fortunata Huaman; my grandma was a strong, independent, resilient, witty, and free-spirited woman. Ever since I was little, she would always tell me stories about her beautiful Peru, and how she would climb trees and eat its fruit or the time she climbed up the mountain when there was a storm and saw a cow get struck by lightning. She taught me and inspired me, she taught me to be outspoken; to be proud of who I was, to know who my ancestors were. She inspired me to be strong, independent, to not need a man; to follow my dreams, and to be hard working. I will always remember her and her witty comebacks, our midnight sandwiches and black coffee, and watching her favorite shows; I Love Lucy and Little House on the Prairie (her comfort character was Laura Ingalls because she reminded her of herself). Love you Grandma! Miss you!

Can't wait to go to the place in all of your childhood stories and see it for myself.
