Evelyn (Loeb) Beilenson

February 7, 1938 — October 4, 2021

White Plains

Evelyn Loeb Beilenson of White Plains, NY died in her sleep in the early morning of October 4. She was 83.

Evelyn was born in Paris just before World War II to Morris and Johanna Loeb, who moved to France from Mutterstadt, Germany in 1934 as the country became inhospitable to Jews.  Held in separate detention camps in France when war broke out, the family eventually reunited and traveled overland into Spain and Portugal. They obtained papers and traveled by ship to the United States. Evelyn was three when the family landed in New York City, and she grew up on the Upper West Side.

Evelyn attended Oberlin College and after earning a BA in Early Education, married Nick Beilenson in 1959.  Nick and she raised three children--John, Laurence, and Suzanne--in Westchester County, moving to White Plains in 1971. She lived there for 50 years until her death.

Emulating her father who started and ran multiple businesses in his lifetime, Evelyn was a successful entrepreneur and business owner. In the seventies, she formed KB interiors with Barbara Kohn Welsh, providing tasteful home design services throughout Westchester.  In 1983, she joined Nick to serve as co-publisher of Peter Pauper Press and helped transform the struggling small book publisher into a multi-million-dollar business. At Peter Pauper, she also authored or compiled more than 60 books, including Angels Are Forever, Wit and Wisdom of Famous American Women, the children’s book The Zoo is Closed Today, and many others.

Evelyn is survived by her husband Nick, to whom she was married for 62 years, and by her three children, John (Wanda), Laurence (Esther), and Suzanne (Robert Wiesenberg). She had six grandchildren: Sarah, Hannah, Tommy, Jane, Jacob, and Carly.
