Eva Kadar

Eva Kadar passed away on Wednesday, September 15, at the age of 93.

Eva was born in Budapest, Hungary, the cherished only child of Berta and Ignaz Rosenfeld. Her childhood came to an abrupt end with the rise of Nazism and the German invasion of Hungary in 1944. During the Holocaust, the Nazis murdered her father and imprisoned 16-year-old Eva at the Ravensbruck concentration camp. After the war, she made her way back to Budapest, where she was reunited with her mother and eventually married Arpad Kadar, who was her true partner in all things and with whom she had a son, George. During the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, Eva and her family were among the over 170,000 refugees who fled the country. She settled first in the Bronx and then in Forest Hills, Queens. Eva spent decades working in New York City's garment factories and lived her final years with her family in Eastchester, NY.

Eva was a brave and passionate woman and a survivor in every sense of the word. Her family was the light of her life. She is survived by her beloved son George, adoring granddaughters Emily and Dorothy, and grandson-in-law Yando. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Arpad, and her daughter-in-law Miriam.

Eva will be buried at a private ceremony on Friday, September 17. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to HIAS or the Joint Distribution Committee.
