Diane Farquhar Obituary

Diane Farquhar, 66, of Hartsdale, New York died from a sudden heart condition on November 12, 2023. She was a passionate and accomplished social worker, a lover of knitting, chocolate, and a glass of chardonnay, a loving wife, sister, nana, aunt and friend, and the best mom in the world to her three daughters, whom she adoringly dubbed her Bunnies.
Diane was born in New York City in 1957, to John and Mary Weg. She spent her childhood in Texas and Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was an identical twin and the oldest of six sisters, all of whom she loved dearly. She received her bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, and her Masters of Social Work at University Of Michigan (Go Blue!). She spent a significant portion of her career as a social worker on Mount Sinai’s Palliative Care Team, where she was a respected colleague, friend and mentor. Diane is affectionately remembered for making a lot of “good trouble” - a high honor in her line of work - which was reflected in her fierce advocacy, care and devotion to her patients.
Family was at the center of Diane’s life. For the past 21 years Diane was a loving, dedicated wife to Vincent Butkiewicz. Diane and Vin were brought together by Diane’s beloved twin Kathy and her husband Jimmy Brandt, Vin’s longtime friend. Diane and Vin had a strong, loving connection. They shared a special life together in Montreal and New York, alongside the girls and their multiple labrador retrievers.
With her late husband, Doug, Diane shared three amazing daughters, cherished memories with a great group of friends, yearly family trips to Oscoda, and a love of Michigan Football games. When Doug tragically passed away, Diane stayed strong for her girls. She put them first - always making time for snuggles, reading together, and songs at bedtime. She cheered them on, encouraged them to pursue their interests, and told them how proud she was of them every chance she got, all while continuing her social work career. Despite all the curveballs life threw at her, Diane remained strong, passionate, and determined - and taught her daughters how to do the same.
Diane was preceded in death by her late husband Doug Farquhar, and parents Mary and John Weg. She is survived by her husband Vincent Butkiewicz; her three daughters, Laura Farquhar (Joe Bittner), Kathryn Farquhar, and Jamie Farquhar( Graham Christensen); her grandchildren Theodore & Abigail Bittner; her sisters Kathy Brandt (Jimmy), Carol Weg, Loretta Ryan, Ronnie Downer(John) and Michelle Fingerle; as well as an ever-growing and loving extended family.
We couldn’t have asked for a better mother, and her bunnies will miss her every day. There is solace in knowing that Diane’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those she touched, and all who loved her.
