Chris K. Thornton

Chris K. Thornton, affectionately known as "yia yia" was a beloved grandmother, mother, and wife during her incredible 87 years of life.  She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, Douglas Thornton II, and Melissa Thornton, at Calvary Hospital on October 15, 2021. She is survived by five grandchildren. Chris was born in Astoria Queens on November 7, 1933, the daughter of George and Mary Keranakis.  She married the love of her life, Douglas Edward Thornton in October of 1965, who proceeded her in death in 1994.

"Strength" is defined as having the physical ability and power to do something, the emotional or mental qualities necessary in dealing with situations or events that are difficult, and the capacity of a person to withstand great force or pressure. It is a word that has many different definitions, but it can be proudly said that Chris Thornton was the epitome of the word "strength." For everyone who knew her, we can all agree that she was one of the strongest and toughest women we've ever had the privilege of knowing.

Visitation, followed by a funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church located at, 10 Mill Rd, New Rochelle, NY 10804.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
