Bulaklak Macalalag Melliza MD

April 18, 1940 ~ June 17, 2022 (age 82)

Dr. Bulaklak (Bu) Macalalag Melliza, 82, of Hartsdale, New York, was called by Our Father to Heaven from her home on June 17, 2022 surrounded by loved ones.

Bu was born on April 18, 1940 in Molo, Iloilo City in the Philippines. She graduated one year early and was Valedictorian from high school. In 1962, after finishing her undergraduate degree, she attended Far Eastern University Institute of Medicine and received a medical degree in General Pediatrics. She did her internship at St. Peter's General Hospital, her residence at the Babies Hospital Unity of United Hospital of Newark, and fellowship at Lincoln Hospital Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. The following salutation was taken from her 50th memorial class yearbook:

After reading all the obituaries in our recent directory, I marvel at how life is so fragile. So dear classmates let us live to the fullest and savor each day as if it is our last. God Bless!

She became a Pediatrician because she loved babies, and often would bring dinnertime stories of how cute and chubby they were and how they were all angels, even the ones that were screaming from their immunization shots. As a devout catholic she attended Mass every Sunday and prayed the rosary every morning. She loved the Yankees, asking ALEXA questions, and weirdly violent movies.

Bu loved to travel but since she had young children, she and her husband elected to take separate vacation in the event something were to happen to the flight. When her children were grown, she and her husband traveled together and especially loved going on cruises. She also loved playing Mahjong with a close circle of friends into all hours of the night. She was active in various Filipino medical organizations in the tri-state area and would only rarely turn down opportunities to get dolled up in beaded gowns for various charity fundraisers.

What she cherished most was to be around family, friends and neighbors, generously hosting Christmas and Thanksgiving just about every year for the entire neighborhood block. And a typical Filipino, she insisted that everyone bring home leftovers.

Bu (cutie), is survived by her husband, Emanuel, her children Marissa, Noel and Edwin and granddaughters, Olivia and Chloe.
