Alberta (Napurski) Harmonay

December 18, 1927 — May 29, 2023

Croton/Elmsford, NY

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Alberta Harmonay on May 29th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Magnificent Mom/Bert was born on December 18, 1927 in Yonkers, to May (nee Gorlich) and Albert Napurski. Bert was raised on Garfield Street and loved being in the horseback riding club at Yonkers High School. After graduation, she worked as a Hospital Administrator - fun fact: she admitted 5 year-old Alan Alda for his tonsillectomy - before meeting the love of her life, Eddie, who lived up the block. Matched up on a blind date by his best friend Joe, her sister May's husband, a wonderful life together began. They eloped to San Diego where Ed was stationed in the Navy. En route, they married on July 2,1953, and were married for 51 amazing years and lived all over the country. When Ed retired from the Navy, they moved to the dream house with a big yard on Hartsdale Road in Elmsford. Bert had the beautiful gift of making everyone feel as if they were the most important person in the world, right at that moment. Loving, kind and welcoming, the side door to their home was always open. Professionally, Bert worked for the Town of Greenburgh Zoning and Planning Department for many years before retiring at 65. When she was 91, the Town Supervisor asked her to return to work, as she had been such an exemplary employee. Ed and Bert were tireless supporters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Elmsford, where they dedicated their time and love for decades. Their dearest friends at OLMC became their extended family, especially School Principal Sister Mary Stephen Healey and the Most Rev. Dr. Jude Arogundade. The family is very grateful for their constant care, love and support. When Ed predeceased her on September 4, 2004, Bert stayed at Hartsdale Road for ten more years before moving to the Croton on Hudson riverfront near her daughter, Lynn, where she loved watching the boats, birds and eagles and walking along the river. The neighbors there quickly became her dear friends. In 2018, Bert was honored by the Village of Elmsford for her outstanding dedication and service to the OLMC Church/School, as well as to the community of Elmsford. Bert is survived by her beloved children Lynn and Allan (Paula), and adoring grandchildren Jacob, Tanya (Bill), Melissa (Willy) and Stephanie, and great-grandchildren Alex, Landon and Lilyanne. Bert is also survived by: her sisters Faith Napurski of Kingston and Grace Poli of Cortlandt Manor, niece Dawn Napurski of Yonkers (who cooked for and called her daily since the start of Covid), nephew Bob Bova who shared her birthday, along with many other loving nieces and nephews. Fourth of ten children, Bert was predeceased by sisters May and Carol, and brothers Fred, Albert, Bob, Edwin and Bernard. Reposing at the Hawthorne Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, Hawthorne, NY, on Thursday, June 1 st , 4-8pm. Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 2nd, 11am Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Elmsford, NY. Entombment to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Bert's beloved Bishop Jude, formerly Administrator of Mount Carmel Church, and Sister Mary Stephen, Principal of OLMC School, the family has requested that donations, if desired, be made as follows: Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 59 East Main Street, Elmsford, NY 10523 Re: Loving Memory of Alberta Harmonay or Catholic Diocese of Ondo, PO Box 8, Elmsford, NY 10523 Re: Loving Memory of Alberta Harmonay
