William Wallace Meyer

William Wallace Meyer, architect, inspector, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on January 26, 2026, at the age of 91. He lived a life defined by curiosity, creativity, and a quiet dedication to both his profession and his family.

Born in 1934 in White Plains, New York, to Helen Wallace Meyer and William Thomas Meyer Jr., a licensed architect, Bill grew up in a family deeply rooted in architecture, history, and public service-an influence that shaped both his career and his lifelong habit of careful observation and storytelling. From an early age, he possessed an active imagination and a deep interest in how things were built, both structures and stories.

Bill attended White Plains High School, graduated from Middlebury College in 1956, and trained as an architect at Columbia University, attending night school while working full time. He earned his architectural license in 1967 and was a member of the Association of Registered Architects.

Bill worked in private practice and as a sole practitioner for 50 years, specializing in architectural inspections, evaluations, and consulting for major financial institutions across the United States. He also served with the United Nations Architectural Department during a formative period of its expansion and completed architectural work for Air Canada facilities in New York, including JFK Airport. Among his civic contributions was the design of the Scarsdale American Legion Memorial Garden, a lasting public space of remembrance. His professional positions and appointments reflected a career grounded in responsibility and integrity.

A proud veteran, Bill served for five years in the Army National Guard. He remained actively engaged in community and service organizations throughout his life, including the Scarsdale Rotary Club, the Old Guard of White Plains, and the American Legion.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill was a gifted historian of family life. He took great care in recording memories through film, photography, and his self-published autobiography, preserving the stories of people, places, and moments that mattered most. His deep connection to place began early, with summers spent tending his parents' cranberry and blueberry farm in the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. He especially cherished time spent skiing, sailing, and traveling together-whether on a mountain in Vermont, during summers on Lake George, or through countless beach days at Shenorock Shore Club and Long Beach Island. These shared experiences were woven into the stories he loved to tell and retell, connecting generations through memory. He was known for his warmth, understated humor, intellectual curiosity, and deep appreciation for history, travel, and art.

At his core, Bill was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Wendy; his children, Bill Meyer (Erin), Cindy Cannon (Garrett), and Deb Meyer Olsen; and his cherished grandchildren, Garrett, Liv, Emma, Liam, and Skye. He followed their lives closely and celebrated their milestones. His home was a place of conversation and creativity, a reflection of the values he carried throughout his life.

Bill will be remembered for his integrity, steadiness, curiosity, and the quiet impact of a life thoughtfully lived. His legacy lives on not only in the buildings he designed and the institutions he helped shape, but in the stories he told, the memories he preserved, and the family he loved so deeply.

Bill's life was also grounded in faith. He believed Jesus Christ to be his Savior and Lord and understood himself as a child of God. With that faith, his family takes comfort in knowing that he has entered God's presence, embraced by eternal peace and love.
