It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Swan Thung, who departed this life on February 13, 2026, in Harrison, New York, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.
Dr. Thung was born on September 29, 1946, to Margaretha and Bernardus Arisurjadi in Magetan, Indonesia. She was a woman of incredible kindness. She always took care of those around her, often placing the needs of others before her own. Giving by nature and selfless in spirit, she never thought of herself first. Her love was shown not in grand gestures, but in the quiet, thoughtful ways she supported her family, friends, and colleagues. Those who knew her will remember her elegance, her warm presence, her gentle smile, and her unwavering devotion to the people she loved.
Dr. Thung was a distinguished Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Department of Pathology, Molecular and Cell-Based Medicine. Her impact on the field of liver pathology was profound. She co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers, wrote 64 book chapters, and authored two books, contributing substantially to the scientific understanding of liver disease.
She trained under the mentorship of Dr. Hans Popper, widely regarded as the father of pathology, whose influence helped shape her lifelong dedication to excellence in liver pathology. Carrying forward this legacy, she was a founding member of the Mount Sinai Liver Transplant Program and established the Mount Sinai Liver Pathology Division and the Liver Pathology Fellowship Program. Graduates of this fellowship program whom she mentored have gone on to hold key leadership positions in academic medical centers throughout the United States and around the world.
In 2023, she was awarded the Jacobi Medallion, the highest honor bestowed upon faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in recognition of her clinical excellence as a physician and educator. She was also a member of the ELVES International Liver Pathology Group, a founding member of the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society, the International Liver Cancer Association, the Alliance for Cancer Gene and Cell Therapy, and the Mount Sinai Liver Cancer Research Program.
Above all, Dr. Thung’s greatest joy was her family, especially her six grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted grandmother who cared for them with boundless tenderness. She delighted in their milestones, their questions, and their dreams. Whether through quiet conversations, shared meals, or simply her attentive presence, she made each child feel deeply known and cherished. Her grandchildren were the brightest source of joy in her life, and even in her final days, their love brought light to her heart. She loved them beyond measure, and they will forever carry her kindness and warmth with them.
She is lovingly survived by her devoted husband, Roy Thung; her sons, Stephen and Andrew; her daughters-in-law, Arlyne, wife of Stephen, and Lisa, wife of Andrew; her cherished grandchildren, Rohan, Anduin, and Aranel, children of Stephen and Arlyne, and Maile, Emmeline, and Eliam, children of Andrew and Lisa; and her beloved sisters, Regina Suriawinata, Indah Oei, Peni Kohar, and Dewi Ramali. Her love for her family was unconditional, and her presence was a steady foundation in their lives.
Her legacy is one of quiet sacrifice, academic brilliance, and enduring love. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will live on.
We are grateful for your love and support. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to two charities:
