Rita Rose Cestone, age 86, of Valhalla, New York, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026. Born on August 31, 1939, in the Bronx, New York, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Picarello.
Rita will be deeply remembered for her profound faith, devotion to family, and pride in her Italian heritage. She is survived by her husband and best friend of 65 years, Vito Anthony (Tony) Cestone; her children, John and his wife Elissa, and Robert and his wife Christy; and her grandchildren, who were her greatest "treasures" and lovingly called her Nonna: Daniel (Kelli), Emily, Matthew, Anna, Marisa, and Christopher. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rita was reunited in heaven with her daughter, Maria Teresa, who passed away at a tender age of six years, as well as her parents, her sister Catherine, and her brother-in-law, Len Mignini.
She accomplished everything she put her mind to. Rita lived a rich, service-filled life as a pillar of her community, dedicating 45 years to the Antonio Meucci Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge #213. Her leadership and faith shone through her work as a Religious Education teacher and Eucharistic Minister at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla, and as PTO/PTA President at Valhalla High School. Rita also devoted countless hours to the Legionnaires of Christ in Thornwood, New York, cooking for the Brothers, attending ordinations, and building lifelong friendships.
Hospitality was Rita's spiritual gift. She found immense joy in cooking and entertaining, whether hosting a graduation party, a backyard barbecue, or her legendary Christmas Eve celebrations. Every meal she made was infused with her secret ingredient: love. Grounded in her deep adoration for the Blessed Mother Mary, Rita lived a life of selfless service to others and to the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, in Valhalla, NY, the link can be found below.
