Ramachandra Divakaruni

Ossining, New York - Rama Divakaruni affectionately known as Kutty among his family and friends, passed away on May 27, 2024, at age 57.

Born on Jan 7, 1967, in Chennai, India, Rama exhibited curiosity and great talent for science and mathematics from a young age. After a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering at IIT, Madras, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA, Rama began his career at IBM in 1994. Over the next 30 years, his inventions covering dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), semiconductor process scaling, chiplets and multi-cloud hybrid technologies earned him over 300 patents. His pioneering spirit and innovative endeavors paved the way for numerous technological advancements in R&D as well as in production. Rama also served as a guiding light and mentor to hundreds of aspiring engineers and scientists, leaving an enduring legacy as a role model.

In addition to his passion for electronics and exploring how nature works, Rama was an active member of the community, supporting a wide range of causes including kids with lemonade stands, education for underserved children and inmates in prisons, theater and arts. His dedication to these pursuits brought him great joy and created lasting friendships.

Work was a big part of Rama's life but his love of family and friends outweighed his love for work. He is celebrated by his wife, Abby Gleason, and by the Divakaruni and Gleason families along with a close-knit circle of extended family members and worldwide friends.

A memorial service to honor Rama's life and legacy will be held on May 31, 9:15 AM-11 AM at the Ballard Durand Cremation Services located at 21 W Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY 10532. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Rama's honor to Asha for Education or any other good cause spreading some light in his memory.
