Merchel Denice Alston, affectionately known as "GiGi" by her family and childhood friends, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, in White Plains, New York. She was born on September 4, 1959, in White Plains, the beloved daughter of the late Lenton and Lily Belle Alston.

Merchel began her education at Rosedale and Eastview Schools and graduated from White Plains High School in 1977. She went on to attend Westchester Business Institute, where she excelled academically and graduated at the top of her class.

Her professional journey began at IBM Corporation in 1979, where she dedicated over 30 years of service in various secretarial and administrative roles. Known for her intelligence, diligence, and professionalism, Merchel added value to every team she was a part of. After retiring from IBM in 2009, she continued her career at Lawrence Home Care, first as a receptionist and later as a scheduler for home care aides in hospice. She officially retired in March 2025.

In 1997, Merchel met the love of her life, Carly Borenkind. Though life briefly led them on separate paths, they reunited in 2005 and were married on May 3, 2008. Over their 20 years together, Merchel and Carly built a strong, beautiful partnership rooted in love, friendship, and mutual respect.

Merchel was preceded in death by her beloved son, Desmond Alston; her parents, Lily Belle and Lenton Alston; her nephew and several aunts and uncles, including her aunt and godmother, Eleanor Holdip, all of whom were dear to her heart.

She is survived by her devoted wife, Carly Borenkind; her niece, who was like a daughter to her, Unique Alston; her siblings Alice Alston-Young (James) and Lenton Alston (Bonnie); her best friend of 50 years, Cynthia Cobb; her goddaughter, Brianna Cobb; her nieces and nephews, including Shaquilla Lahon, Tenay Alston, and Lenton Love Alston III; her aunt RosaLee Alston and her cherished grandson, Jakai Brown. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Twinkie, who brought her daily joy and comfort.

Merchel will be remembered for her radiant smile, warmth, wisdom, unwavering strength, and the deep love she held for her family. Her beautiful spirit touched all who knew her, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of her loved ones.
