Mary Axthelm

Mary Annette Axthelm (nee Marie Grimm) passed away March 26, 2014. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 17, 1915. Parents were Pauline Charlotte (nee Wright) and Henry Peter Grimm. She attended schools there and graduated from Bushwick High School. She became a Secretary to an Executive of the Graybar Electric Company in New York City. She married Everett Wm. Axthelm on December 6, 1947. They lived in Richmond Hill, Long Island, before moving to White Plains in 1958. She was active in PTA activities, and also became a Den Mother when her sons Paul and David were in the Boy Scouts of America. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church since 1958 and served as Corresponding Secretary for the Women of St. Bartholomew’s for many years. She was also a member of the Woman’s Club of White Plains and served on its Board of Directors – one term as Corresponding Secretary – and one term as Recording Secretary –as well as on all the other Boards in various capacities. She was also a member of the B. Altman & Co. Fashion Advisory Board. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett Wm. Axthelm, her son David Wayne Axthelm and her sister Charlote Grimm Widlake. She is survived by her son Paul Everett Axthelm of Syracuse, N.Y. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 pm at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue at South Broadway, White Plains. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 am at the funeral home followed by burial at family plot in White Plains Rural Cemetery. Donations if desired may be sent to the Meals on Wheels of White Plains.
