Marjorie Rose Gleit (86)—a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother—passed away on October 26, 2025.

Marjorie’s childhood was spent in the Bronx and Forest Hills, Queens. After high school, she attended Cornell and Barnard. While home from college on break, she went on a blind date with Milton Gleit. Marjorie and Milt independently saved each hand-written letter they had exchanged while dating, and these letters are now preserved in twelve full binders. Marjorie and Milt married in 1959 and welcomed three children, Jonathan, Lawrence, and Pamela.

Nothing was more important to Marjorie than family. Her daughter, Pam, recalls that she was always smiling when, in later years, her children and grandchildren were together. When on a family vacation, Marjorie always sought out a round table for 12 so we could see one another.

Marjorie was brilliant, gentle, insightful, and an incredible listener. She paid attention to the details. Not only was every outfit perfectly color-coordinated, but she remembered the small details in her family and friends’ lives. She had a remarkable ability to zero-in on the things that make a person special. This gift shone in her work as a beloved life-long educator. She was a teacher by trade and inclination. Throughout her career, she was a classroom teacher, PTA Council president, librarian, and administrator. She developed The Windward School’s “study skills” curriculum. Her dedication to her students and belief in all children’s capacity to learn remain an inspiration to her daughter-in-law and granddaughter who followed in her footsteps as educators. In her free time, Marjorie enjoyed reading.

Marjorie is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Milton Ralph Gleit, her parents, Martin and Rose, her sister Janet, and her son-in-law, Robert DeBell. Marjorie is survived by her children: Jonathan Gleit and his wife Debra, Lawrence Gleit and his wife Paulette, and Pamela DeBell; and her four grandchildren: Rebecca, Jennifer, Zachary, and Matthew. We loved her deeply and she will be missed.

A private funeral service for Marjorie was held on November 2, 2025. In honor of Marjorie’s memory, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the American Lung Association, Memorial Sloan Kettering, or the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
