We mourn the loss of Margret Rupp Gonzalez, 91, of Valhalla, New York, who passed away on October 24th, 2022. She is survived by her two daughters, Carmen Freed of Peekskill, N.Y., and Magdalena Fitzsimmons of Baltimore Maryland, as well as her three grandchildren Katie and Steven Freed of Peekskill, N.Y. and Payton Wandrey of Moberly, Missouri. Margret was married to James Gonzalez and had a son, James Gonzalez Jr., both of whom pre-deceased her.
Margret was born in Hersbruck, Germany, and emigrated to the United States as a young woman to work as an au pair for a family in Washington D.C. She later met her future husband, James, who had emigrated from Spain, while both were taking classes learning to speak English. Margret was a devoted wife and mother, who ensured that her children grew up exposed to a variety of cultural experiences, and who valued education, respect for diversity, and love for nature and the environment. She eventually began a career as a Montessori teacher, and over the years nurtured and supported countless groups of children as they passed through her classroom.
Besides her love of teaching, Margret was known for her culinary skills, and all those who knew her looked forward to the many baked treats she made for them as a thank-you or for holidays and special occasions. She was also an avid crafter, turning out projects that were knitted, crocheted, embroidered, quilted, or sewn, that were given to family and friends over her lifetime.
Margret will be remembered for her love of family, generosity of spirit, and her love of all nature’s wonders.
