Joan K. Horan

Joan Roberta Horan of Thornwood, N.Y. sadly passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the age of 96 surrounded by her loved ones. Joan was the proud daughter of August and Virginia Kickbusch. She was born and raised in Wausau, Wisconsin. In 1955, Joan met the love of her life, Leo (Larry) Horan in Palm Beach, Florida. They were happily married for 67 years. Together, Larry and Joan raised six children: Virginia (Panigiotis), Larry III, Robert, Nina (Richard), Michael, Lisa (Martin)

Joan was a woman ahead of her times. She was learning to fly an airplane before the war broke out. After the war, Joan and three girlfriends crossed the ocean on the Queen Mary in 1949 to tour Europe.

Joan exposed her children and grandchildren to her love of reading, travel, art, and animals. After raising her six children, she went to work for Bloomingdales in White Plains NY. She worked in the book department so she could meet people who shared her passion for reading and surround herself with books.  Joan was known to all as a conversationalist. She would spark up a conversation with anyone she came in contact with; she had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed learning about people and places. Joan was a staunch supporter of animal rescue, and was rarely seen without a dog close by.  Joan loved to spend her summers at the family cottage in upstate N.Y., where she enjoyed sailing, sightseeing, and socializing at the clubhouse with lifelong friends and family.

Joan will be remembered as:  Always a lady, so gracious to all, always a kind word and encouragement to all.

Joan is survived by her 13 grandchildren: Joan (deceased) Ioannis, Michael, Kelsy, Jennifer, Lea, Michelle, Sarah, Shannon, Samantha, Sabrina, Hunter and Jake, and one great-grandchild: Jack

The family wishes to thank, Dr. Deborah Shapiro of Westchester Health Northwell and Rich and Ann Marie Lipari for their wonderful care given to their mother.

In lieu of flowers donations to either Gilda’s Club of Westchester or The Humane Society, would be appreciated.

Visiting at Hawthorne Funeral Home on Friday, March 4, 2022 from 5-8 PM. Where services will be held at 7 PM. Entombment will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.
