James Walter Bryant, Jr. of Elmsford, NY lost his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) on February 25, 2014 with his family by his side at White Plains Hospital. He was 68 years old.
He was born on August 25, 1945 in New York City to James W. Bryant, Sr. and Beatrice Bryant Cain (Baker). James attended schools in New York and the Bronx and graduated from Haaren High School.
He proudly serviced in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967 and was honorably discharged. He worked at Doubleday Book Stores in New York City for 15 years as assistant manager before joining the New York State Corrections Department. He worked as a Corrections Officer for 23 years at the Sing Sing and Bedford Hills Correctional facilities before retiring in 2002. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patricia Bryant and his children Christopher Bryant of Tennessee, Anna Bryant and Angela Bryant of New York, Veronica Griffin of Massachusetts and Jordan Bryant of New York. James is also survived by his mother Beatrice Cain, 9 grandchildren, 3 brothers James Rene, Walter Russell and Karl Bryant of Queens, NY , and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends on Thursday Feb. 27 from 2-4 pm and 6-8pm at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home (Elmsford Chapel), 72 E. Main St. Elmsford, NY. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 28th at 10am. Donations can be made in James’ memory to the ALS Association @ www.als-ny.org.
