Irving (Irv) L. Murray resided in Hartsdale, NY from 2005 till 2018. He died on October 24, 2018 at Montefiore Hospital in Bronx, NY from complications of cranial bleeding after removal of a blood clot near the brain stem.
Irv was born December 5, 1958 in Elmhurst, NY to George and Helen Murray. He attended school in NY: Incarnation Elementary School, Bishop Riley High School which later merged with, Saint Francis Prep High School. He married his partner of 31 years, Waitari Harvey, at the Greenburgh, NY Town Hall, on January 15, 2017.
He received a B.S. in Math from ST. John's University in NY. He graduated Suma Cum Laude. He began working for AT&T as a software engineer in 1984. During this time he completed a M.S. degree in Computer Science at New York's Polytechnic University. Irv left AT&T in 2004 because it moved the White Plains office to NJ and he was the closest care giver for his mother in NY.
Following AT&T, Irv worked at Merck Pharmaceutical for a week in 2004, before he was diagnosed with stage 4, large B cell lymphoma. After treatment his cancer went into remission. He then found contract work with NBC in Shelton, CT. He found more contract work with the Pepsi Bottling Group. He landed a full-time job at Readers Digest (RD) in Pleasantville, NY in 2005. His job at RD was outsourced in 2014. In the summer of 2014 he acquired a job at Time Inc. as a Java Tech Lead. Later that same year he appeared as a contestant on the game show he watched religiously, Jeopardy. The job at Time Inc. was outsourced after seven months. Irv found a job as a software engineer at Montefiore IT, part of the Montefiore Hospital in 2015. He was optimistic by default and his life reflected that.
In addition to his love for "Jeopardy," He enjoyed tennis and softball. He joined the NY Big Apple Softball League (BASL) in 1987. He was inducted into the league's hall of fame in 2012. He was a valued player on all the teams he joined. Irv also enjoyed travel. He had visited France, England, Germany, Spain, Amsterdam and Italy in his life time.
Preceding him in death are his grandparents: George and Ruth Murray (dad's side) and Joseph and Ida Diggs (mother's side) and his parents, George and Helen Murray. He is survived by his husband, Waitari Harvey in Hartsdale, NY; his brother George Murray, sister in-law Teresa Woo Murray and their son Marcus; his aunt, Barbara Lockhart and cousins: Kei Lockhart and his wife Rocio and daughter Kirsten, Kim Lockhart and her daughter Shantell, Kelly Lockhart, his girlfriend Melissa and their daughter Savanah, and his second cousins, Emma and William Lee.
