Howard Nadel, affectionately referred to as Howie, died suddenly at age 67 on December 19, 2018. Born in the Bronx, NY, he attended Columbus High School and pursued a career in pharmacy. He graduated from Columbia College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1974, and became an active member of the Columbia Alumni Association. He received the Columbia University Alumni Medal in 1989 for Distinguished Service and was acclaimed for sustaining and revitalizing the pharmacy school alumni board.
He began his career as a pharmacist at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. During this time, he received the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for 21st Century Innovation Technology for his project "Integration of New Technologies to Improve Patient Care." This project directly integrated the computerized patient information system with robotic medication distribution. He eventually became the Director of Clinical Research of Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital. Through his passionate leadership and unprecedented contributions, the small clinical research department grew into a multi-million dollar facility. The study he was most proud of developed a gene therapy for the treatment of HIV. The methodology from this therapy has implications for the treatment of not only HIV but many genetic conditions. In 2016, he retired after 35 years of distinguished service.
Howie spent most of his time with his family and friends. He was the loving husband of Deardre for 36 years and a dedicated father to daughter Ellen and son Steven. Steven is a mechanical engineer and Ellen is a nurse practitioner currently pursuing her Doctoral degree at Columbia University. Howie lived passionately doing the things he loved, which included spending his time at the Scarsdale Municipal Pool and taking many trips to Walt Disney World. He was a Giants season ticket holder for over 50 years. Howie was also active in various positions within his community. He served as President of the Scarsdale Forum, chaired various committees, and coached many of his children's sports teams. He had endless compassion and dedication to helping others. Howie was truly a kid at heart with an unmatched sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.
