Helen Taylor Stevens, 92, of Vero Beach Fl., died peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2020. A second‐generation Rockland County native, Helen was born in Spring Valley, N.Y., on November 28, 1927. She was the daughter of Henriette Schopper Taylor and Robert John Taylor. Helen graduated from Spring Valley High School and from Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. While at Syracuse, Helen was also president of Phi Mu sorority and remained active as an alumna throughout her life. She earned a Master of Science in Education degree at SUNY New Paltz, and also a Master of Library Science degree at Columbia University, New York, N.Y. In 1949, she married Herbert John (Jack) Stevens, Jr. They had two children and lived in Nanuet and New City, N.Y. Helen taught at Upper Nyack Elementary School in Upper Nyack, N.Y., and later became the head librarian at the Felix Festa Middle School in Clarkstown, N.Y. Helen attended St. John's Episcopal Church, New City, N.Y. She was an avid genealogist, an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and an energetic world traveler. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years. She is survived by her children, Robert John Stevens (Elizabeth) of Durham, NC and Kenneth Richard Stevens (Rosemary) of Katonah, N.Y.; three grandchildren Elizabeth Stevens Detring (Derek), Anne Stevens Cable (Andrew), and Robert Taylor Stevens; and six great-grandchildren Derek Crane Detring, Jr., Elizabeth Holder Detring, Mary Stevens Detring, Prescott Andrew Cable, Davis Stevens Cable, and Elizabeth Anne Cable. An Episcopal burial celebrating Helen's life will be held at a later date at St. John's Episcopal Church in New City, N.Y., followed by interment in the Resurrection Garden.
