Greg Lee Doerr, 80, of Ardsley, New York, passed away on April 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with ALS. He was surrounded by family and his beloved dogs having spent several weeks at home on Hospice.
Greg was born on March 4, 1945, to Lester and Virginia (Bisbee) Doerr, in Queens County, New York. After Greg graduated from White Plains High School in 1963, he joined the Air Force and served in Vietnam as a mechanic. Upon his return he worked at Mobil Oil as a Diesel Truck Mechanic. After leaving Mobil Oil, he became a motorcycle mechanic, working at several shops throughout the tri state area. He was a member of the Crotona Motorcycle Club and during that time his interest in motorcycle racing peaked and he began racing at a track run by their club in Fishkill.
In 1982 Greg began working at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, working his way up from maintenance mechanic to Director of Plant and Maintenance followed by Director of Planning and Construction. He would remain in their employ for 30+ years.
In 1974, Greg met his beloved wife Marianne of 49 years, they were married at Immaculate Conception Church in Irvington on June 15, 1975. They went on to have 2 children, Ginny and Geoff.
Growing up in Hartsdale he moved to Yonkers after marriage and ultimately moved with his family to Ardsley.
In 2012, Greg retired and spent time in Lake Luzerne enjoying boating with his grandchildren, target shooting, reading books but most of the time you could find him fixing just about anything that anyone needed. He was often referred to as, “MacGyver.” Although he was a man of few words, he made his presence known and was admired by all who knew him He enjoyed spending his winters in Melbourne, FL.
In addition to enjoying his retirement, he held several part time jobs most recently as a Help Truck Driver. Never one to back away from helping people it was just another part of his personality, and he was disappointed when he had to stop due to his illness.
Greg was predeceased by his parents as well as his bother Gary and sister Gail. He is survived by his wife Marianne, his daughter Ginny, son Geoff, grandson Brandon, and granddaughters Morgan and Kayla as well as his brother-in-law Joe, sister-in-law Ellen and several nieces and nephews.
Greg was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion.
Services will be held at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 72 East Main Street, Elmsford, New York 10523, April 27, 2025, 3pm-6pm. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ALS United of Greater New York.
