Thornwood

George A. Letscher, of Thornwood, NY, and formerly of the Bronx, N.Y. passed away on Monday, August 8, 2022. He was born on January 31, 1941 to the late George and Elizabeth Letscher.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years Geraldine, three children George (Hanna), Scott (Deidre) and Lynn (Richard), siblings John, Betty, and Deborah.  Also survived by his grandchildren George Jr., Ryan, Lauren and Travis and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. George graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. He was employed at Railway Express and Victor Steel and then worked at Con Edison for 32 years until his retirement in 2001. At Con Edison, he started his career as a meter reader and earned promotions to management as a General Operating Supervisor in Customer Operations.

George played basketball and baseball in his youth and became an avid softball player and bowler into his 50's.  He was a sports fan, with the New York Yankees being his favorite team and Mickey Mantle being his favorite player as a youth.  He loved March Madness and watched sports with his children and attended their sporting events in their school years.  He coached all three of his children at one point of their sports activities and loved every minute of it.  George was a family man and was loved by many.  He gave advice to his grandsons when they played baseball and attended his granddaughter’s music recitals and gymnastics events. He also coached his nieces at softball when they attended Good Counsel Academy and Our Lady of Victory High School. He had a great sense of humor and his laugh was contagious. He was also a regular parishioner at his Catholic Church.

In March 2019, George was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. After surgery and treatment, he amazed his family by surviving 40 months. He worked hard in physical therapy and his determination to survive and be with his family was always evident and he was once again a role model for those around him. He passed peacefully at home with his family by his side.
