Edward A. Hynes

Edward Aloysius Hynes passed peacefully in his sleep on June 13, 2022. Ed, a.k.a. Eddie, was 87 and had been living in Hamilton, NJ, just minutes from his son Jay’s home. Ed is predeceased by his best friend and beloved wife of 64 years, Judy, his brothers James and Christian, and his sister Joan. He is survived by five loving children: Peggy, Pat, Jay,  Marilyn, and Joyce, eleven grandchildren: John, Jessica, Jack, Emma, Henry, Owen, Lamine, Julia, Sonia, Megan and Sydney and two great-grandsons: Juan and Kai.

Ed grew up in the Bronx with his mother, three siblings and his Aunt Helen. His two passions: football and understanding people and their stories. A gifted writer, his life's work involved engaging people and telling stories that might make a difference.  He began his career as a reporter for the Associated Press (AP) after graduating from Iona College with a degree in History. Next, he was the Director of Public and Government Relations for Sperry & Hutchinson Company (S&H) in NYC for 16 years. After leaving Sperry & Hutchinson, Ed brought his communications skills to the Medical Society of the State of New York, and then to Marist College.

Ed was always a strong and loving presence in his home, spending evenings, weekends and vacations with family. He was a devoted, active and engaged father by any measure, and certainly ahead of his time, socially. He inspired his children and grandchildren to always be their best, academically, athletically and spiritually.

Ed’s interests expanded to include sailing in the 1980s. He was the proud owner of the “Ballyhaunis” which he kept in Oyster Bay Harbor for many years. Later in his retirement, he and Judy moved to Florida to escape the cold, and to be near their daughter Peggy.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Interment will follow immediately. Gate of Heaven Cemetery is located at 10 West Stevens Avenue in Hawthorne, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Prospect Hill Foundation . (During Ed’s time at Sperry & Hutchinson, he served as the second Executive Director of The Prospect Hill Foundation from 1968 to 1972. This private family foundation was established by Ed’s mentor and supervisor William S. Beinecke in 1959.)  Checks may be sent to: The Prospect Hill Foundation,  99 Park Avenue, Suite 2220, New York, NY 10016. Please include Ed’s name in the memo space on the check.
