Debbie Zarges passed away on May 7, 2026, at the age of 58. Throughout her life, Debbie brought joy, laughter, and love to all who knew her. A woman with Down Syndrome, she touched countless lives with her warmth, kindness, and remarkable spirit.
Born in 1967, Debbie spent her early years at a private residential school in New York. It was there, when she was just five years old, that I first met her while working at the school during my college years. Even then, Debbie's bright smile, infectious laughter, and wonderful sense of humor left a lasting impression. After graduating from college, I remained in touch with Debbie over the years, and when I returned to New York permanently, I became more involved in her life. Our relationship deepened, and I was honored to eventually become her legal guardian.
Debbie brought love and light wherever she went. She had an extraordinary joy for life and a gift for making people feel welcome. One of the greatest joys of Debbie's life was music and dancing. She loved a good party and could often be found on the dance floor, smiling and encouraging others to join in. Debbie had a special way of including everyone around her, making each person feel valued, accepted, and part of the celebration.
In recent years, Debbie's favorite song was All of Me by musical artist, John Legend. Her Residence Manager shared that she never tired of hearing it and always sang along. The song's message reflected the way Debbie lived her life and loved the people around her. Debbie gave her whole heart to her relationships, and her love was felt by everyone fortunate enough to know her. She accepted people as they were, offered friendship freely, and brought warmth and compassion wherever she went.
Debbie also became a cherished part of our family. She enjoyed joining us on trips to our house in the Pocono Mountains and eagerly participated in local activities and outings, including the annual Balloon Festival. While she enjoyed every adventure, her favorite part of any visit was spending time with "Big Dog," her affectionate name for our German Shepherd.
In her twenties, Debbie achieved an important milestone when she moved into a group home operated by Cardinal McCloskey Community Services. There she lived among her peers, formed lasting friendships, and enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life. The dedicated staff and caring environment provided her with opportunities to thrive, and she flourished under their compassionate care.
Debbie's life was a testament to the power of love, connection, and community. Her resilience, affection, sense of humor, and enthusiasm for life inspired all who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, the happiness she shared and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of family, friends, caregivers, and all those whose lives she touched.
May we remember Debbie for her laughter, her dancing, her generous spirit, her love of music, and for the joy she found in both people and animals. Most of all, may we remember the love she shared so freely and the light she brought into the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
