On July 3, 2026, Charles Malcolm Segal, son of Suzanne and Jacques Segal, died peacefully at home after several years of a courageous battle with the aftereffects of cancer and its treatment. He was surrounded by the love of his wife, Emily, and daughters, Olivia and Charlotte.

In addition to his daughter-in-law, Laeti, Charles will be deeply missed by his three sisters, Bonnie, Barbara, and Cathy; his brothers-in-law, Steve and Eric; and his many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and cherished friends.

Charles spent much of his life building and renovating homes, kitchens, and bathrooms throughout New York City. A gifted craftsman with an artist's eye, he believed beautiful work was worth doing well. Whether renovating a kitchen or building a home from the ground up, he took enormous pride in creating things that would last.

Charles was endlessly curious. An avid reader and lifelong student of politics, finance, psychology, and history, he was always searching: for understanding, for beauty, for adventure, and for whatever lay just beyond the horizon. He loved spirited conversations, thoughtful debate, and asking questions that often stretched long after everyone else was ready to move on.

He found joy on the golf course, in the cockpit of a small airplane, on the ski slopes, and anywhere curiosity could take him. He never lost his sense of wonder. Whether looking up at the night sky or inventing bedtime "King Stories" for Olivia and Charlotte, he had a remarkable way of making the world feel larger, stranger, and more interesting.

Charles met the love of his life, Emily, on Fire Island, and together they built a life filled with love, family, and adventure. He was endlessly proud of Emily and the work she devoted her life to as a high school social worker. He loved hearing about her students and the lives she touched, and one of his greatest sources of pride was knowing that by loving and supporting her, some small part of him reached those young people too.

Charles will be remembered for his unmistakable laugh, his appreciation of Emily's cooking, his fierce curiosity, and his remarkable talent for recruiting friends into whatever adventure had captured his imagination that week. Above all, he will be remembered for the deep love he had for his family and for his unwavering desire to care for those he would one day leave behind - a promise he kept.

He will be missed beyond measure.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles' memory may be made to First Tee Metropolitan New York, a youth development organization that empowers young people through the game of golf while building character and life skills:
