Carmela Mazzella

Carmela Mazzella, 60 years old, of Elmsford, NY, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Friday, May 16th, 2025, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Carmela was born in the Bronx, NY on August 3rd, 1964. She attended St. Raymond Elementary School and Academy for Girls on East Tremont Avenue. Carmela worked at Bronxdale Bingo for 24 years. She had a love for gambling and enjoyed playing the Great Africa Xtra Reward slot machine at Empire City Casino, Spanish 21 at the Borgata Hotel & Casino at Atlantic City, and Blackjack at Mohegan Sun.

Carmela was a bright light in everyone's life and will always be remembered by her infectious laugh and smile. She loved a good selfie and taking pictures with her family. Her home was filled with frames and plaques that said, "This is us," "I love you to the moon and back," and "My favorite people call me Nana" to name a few.

Carmela's favorite time of the year was summer where she enjoyed entertaining in her backyard, lounging by the pool, sisters' weekends in Pennsylvania, and road trips to Jersey Shore. Sisters' weekends included trips to Parx Casino, shopping at Boscov's and dining at Carlucci's Grill. One of her favorite pastimes was watching Golden Girls, I Love Lucy and All in the Family, in addition to Hallmark and Lifetime movies, and soap operas.

Carmela had an immense love and appreciation for her friends and family. She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Anthony Mazzella, her children Genoveffa Mazzella (Ernel) and Pietro Mazzella, her grandchildren Gabriel Marcos Cabrera and Galilea Lopez, her mother and father-in-law Pietro Mazzella and Genoveffa Marciano, her siblings Anna Mattana, Neil Aversano (Antionetta), and Elizabeth Serano, her sister-in-law Maria Teresa Mazzella (Paulo), her nephews Salvatore Aversano and Gianluca De Donatis, and nieces Tavia Kohn (Paul), Jessica Mclees (Tommy) and Jessica De Donatis. Carmela's great nieces and nephews include Daniella, Gabriella, Sal, Ava, Aiden, Faye (Goddaughter), Audrey, Tommy, Leo and many cousins.

She is perceived in death by her parents, Salvatore Aversano and Anna Maria Tagliamonte, along with her grandmother Anna Amalfitano and grandfather Aniello Tagliamonte, brother-in-law Antonio Mattana, and her dear Godmother Phyllis Amitrano.

Services will be held at Ballard-Durand Funeral & Cremation Services of Elmsford (72 E Main St, Elmsford, NY 10523) on Friday, May 23rd between 3:00-9:00pm.

Mass will take place at the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church (59 E Main St, Elmsford, NY 10523) on Saturday, May 24th at 11:00am.

Interment to follow at the Rosewood Mausoleum - Ferncliff Cemetery (280 Secor Rd, Hartsdale, NY 10530).
