Betty Gatewood, 76, of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and Penobscot, ME, died on January 14, 2026, of complications from cerebral amyloid angiopathy.
She loved good books, music, birds, and plants and was a gardener extraordinaire. She looked forward to spending time in Maine every year and took delight in the song of the hermit thrush and the calls of the loon.
For many years she worked as an editor for New York publishers.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, George Shakespear, many members of the Shakespear family, and hundreds of beautiful plants. Her brother, Charles Gatewood, died in 2016.
To honor her memory, plant a garden. Memorial donations may also be sent to Donate - Room to Read or the Protect Maine's Environment: Natural Resources Council of Maine.
