Bernard Alfred Birnbaum

October 2, 1957 — September 14, 2015

Born on October 2, 1957 Departed on September 14, 2015

Birnbaum, Bernard A. The trustees, faculty, and staff of NYU Langone Medical Center mourn the passing of our friend and colleague, Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, senior vice president and vice dean, chief of hospital operations. Over the course of a distinguished career, Dr. Birnbaum made seminal contributions to the field of radiology. Equally important, he served as one of the principal architects of NYU Langone Medical Center’s rapid ascent to its position today as one of our nation’s premier academic medical centers. Under his leadership and focus on improving quality and safety, our institution received many accolades, including our #1 ranking among the nation’s leading academic medical centers for two consecutive years by The University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) Quality and Accountability Performance Scorecard. Dr. Birnbaum’s legacy can be seen and felt throughout NYU Langone. His work as an institutional leader, a physician, and a mentor was an inspiration to all whose lives he touched. His humor, enthusiasm, expertise, and tireless dedication to improving the experience of patients and their families and to the relief of human suffering will be profoundly missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife and member of the Department of Radiology at NYU Langone, Maj Wickstrom, MD, and their children Sarah and Noah. He is also survived by his sister, Mindy; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Susan Birnbaum and John and Heidi Birnbaum; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dan and Cindy Wickstrom; and nieces and nephews Rachel, William, Evan and Adam Birnbaum and Evan and Morgan Wickstrom.
