Barbara was born in Washington Heights, NYC on 9/9/36 to Mary and Michael
Meehan. She grew up there where she met and married her beloved husband
Peter R. DeMontravel on 10/12/57. They settled in the Bronx where they
raised three children: Chris, Patricia (Alexander) and Peter J. (PJ). Once
the children entered school, Barbara went back to school and earned a
Bachelor's Degree from Pace University.
The family moved to Westchester, NY in 1973 where Barbara continued her
studies and earned a Master's Degree from St. John's University. Then, in
1977, she accepted a position as a History teacher for St. Barnabas High
School in the Bronx. She happily worked there, side by side with the
Sisters of Charity, for 20 years until 1997. Barbara retired to Mahopac
where she and Peter moved in 1995 and then to Mohegan Lake in 2004. They
loved helping with the child-care of their two grandchildren, Patricia and
Joe Alexander's daughters, Danielle and Carolyn.
Peter and Barbara loved suburban living. They adopted a Miniature
Schnauzer, Jeter, who she adored, she gardened, bird watched and enjoyed
holiday and weekly meals with the family. Peter and Barbara took cruises
with their family, spent winters in Florida and enjoyed regular dinners out,
the movies and day trip excursions to Manhattan, City Island and Little
Italy in the Bronx. Shortly after the death of Peter, her husband of 57
years, Barbara moved to Ormond Beach, FL (2016) full time.
Barbara is survived by her children, grandchildren, Joe Alexander, her
brother Bernie Meehan and his wife Eleanor, as well as her in-laws Gay
(DeMontravel) and Ramsay Moran, Roger and Marie DeMontravel, Susan
(DeMontravel) Pirozzi and many nieces, nephews and extended family. She
leaves behind her loving caretakers at Signature Healthcare, Ormond Beach,
her co-workers, neighbors and friends.
Barbara had a full and happy life and will be dearly missed by her family
and friends. Please keep her in your prayers.
