Adele Faber passed away on April 24th, 2024 at the age of 96.
Adele was born in the Bronx, NY in 1928. She was the youngest of three children. She grew up in a home where Yiddish was spoken and English was a second language. Adele found a love of reading at a young age. This puzzled her father, who used to call her "The Book" because he so often found her curled up in a chair engrossed in a story. This little girl grew up to write books that would change the world.
Adele's first book, Liberated Parents, Liberated Children, which she coauthored with Elaine Mazlish, became an instant New York Times best seller, and received the Christopher award for "literary achievement affirming the highest values of the human spirit." Her next book, How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids will Talk, became an international best seller, affecting the lives of millions of people across the world. She went on to coauthor seven books with Elaine, which have been translated into over 30 languages. She appeared on every major talk show from Donahue to Oprah to Good Morning America. She was an impassioned and lively speaker, using her background in theater to bring her message to audiences through storytelling and role playing, immersing them in the feelings and experiences of children. Her group workshops programs are used by thousands of parents and teachers around the world.
Adele's mission to teach adults to honor the feelings of children as well as their own, engage children's cooperation without threats and punishment, her strategies for peaceful problem solving and conflict resolution, still resonate today, fifty years after her first book was published. In fact the most recent Spiderman movie, in which Spidey has a little web shooting baby girl, features the superhero packing Adele's How to Talk book before heading off on a father daughter adventure. At 95 years of age Adele was delighted to hear about this latest, quirky honor.
Adele is survived by Leslie Faber, her beloved husband of 74 years, her three children, Carl, Joanna and Abram, and her seven grandchildren, Daniel, Sam, Zachary, Tracey, Coco, Olive and Ryan
